Group Cultural Presentations

We will use the wiki for updates and some materials related to the group cultural presentations. I will ask you to post updates on here.


Thursday, Oct. 6:
  • Create a new page on our wiki for your presentation and post group members and an update as to what was accomplished during work session
  • Each person should post their pre-assessment responses on the group's page.

Thursday, Oct. 13:
Each group should post an update as to their progress on the assignment.

Thursday, Oct. 20:
Post a tentative outline and list of resources for the presentation.

Tuesday, Nov. `1:
Practice and final preparations for presentation

Diverse Learners Text Talk Assignment

Teacher candidates will choose a text from the list provided. The list includes a variety of children’s/adolescent/adult literature, articles, and media. Teacher candidates will read, view, or listen to their chosen text. Teacher candidates will then reflect on the relevancy of the text to their own cultural awareness, its relevancy to the classroom, and to their students.



Candidates will share reflections with their classmates by posting a reflection on the class Wiki. Teacher candidates will view a minimum of three other postings and comment on the relevancy of those texts as well.



Important Dates:

Assignment Introduction: Thursday, Sept. 8

Text Selection: no later than Tuesday, Sept. 20 (no more than 2 students per text)

Reflection Posted on Wiki: no later than Tuesday, Sept. 27 (to prepare for class discussion)

Class Discussion and Wiki Comments Posting: In class on Tuesday, Sept. 27



Wiki Reflection Prompts:



  • Include a graphic of book jacket on wiki.(optional)
  • Write a short description of the book/text.
  • What diverse group or groups is being depicted?
  • How did reading or viewing your text change your perception of students who might be in your classroom?
  • How did reading or viewing your text enhance your cultural awareness of the students you will serve?
  • What new insights do you have now?
  • Was this text relevant to your teaching practice and/or the classroom community?
  • Do you recommend this text to others? Why or why not?
  • Would you use this book with your students?



Posting Comments:

On the discussion tab of the wiki pages, read and respond to a minimum of three of your classmates’ reflections. Response should include your reaction to the “text” and if you would or would not consider it a good resource for you or your classroom. We will do this AFTER the class discussion on Sept. 27






Please create your own page to post your reflection on your text. See the directions below to get started and then open the file for wiki directions for further instructions.




Getting Started:
  • You will receive an email invitation to our class Wiki. Watch for it in your wolfmail.
  • It will be from Wikispaces and the subject line will be, “You have been invited to the UGDiverseLearnersProject2011 wiki.”
  • Click the link. You will need to accept the invitation and follow directions to create an account at Wikispaces.
  • When you create your account, write down your username and password. If you want to protect your privacy, do not use your last name as part of your username.
  • Record the url for wikispaces. http://www.wikispaces.com/
  • This wiki will be viewable by the public. Only our class will be able to add or edit material. Be aware that your ideas and opinions may be viewed by the public.

For your project:
  • Create a new page
  • Name it your first name and the title of the text. Example: LisaLocomotion

  • You are ready to start typing.

  • You may choose to do your work in Word and then copy and paste. There is no spell check in the Wiki and you will have a backup of your work.

  • In the first line indicate status of project.Click Save in the toolbar to save your work.
    • Work in Progress – Last updated (put date you last worked.)
    • Completed – Date – When you finish.

  • Since you are working on the web. Do not leave this open for long periods of time without saving. You will lose your work.
  • To begin working again, you will click on your name on the right side. When your page appears, click edit by the pencil.
  • The assignment is described on the Home page. I have created a sample for you. It is called Sample Assignment and will be listed on the right side of the wiki.
